The Boy Who Would Not Explore

The ultimate lesson all of us have to learn is unconditional love, which includes not only others, but ourselves as well” – Elizabeth Kubler-Ross

When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace” – Jimi Hendrix

The official deadline for the submission of articles in my CDS has now passed. As earlier promised, here’s one of the four pieces I sent in. it may not feel like my typical style, but don’t forget the primary audience is different. And, I didn’t wanna do any tweaking {hence the monster quotes}. So, …….

“Once, in the ancient lands of the great knights lived a noble and famous king; a man whose every fibre was taut with valour. He lived with his family in the small town of Nabe-Nawe – and from there, discharged his royal responsibilities. His name was Chukwudi and he ruled his people with wisdom, foresight and integrity. In his time, the kingdom knew plenty – of food and wealth. It was almost perfect, but – as nothing really can be – a blemish soon reared its head. None of the king’s three wives could bear him an heir. At first, that didn’t bother him because he loved his seven daughters dearly. As time went by, however, and on seeing the prevalent greed and selfishness among the ruling class, he soon became distraught.

Bethsaida: Director’s Cut

“Most of our assumptions have outlived their uselessness” – Marshall McLuhan

“Order is heaven’s first law” – Alexander Pope

Disclaimer: Coming from someone who once wrote Sermons: What’s the Point, this may sound a wee bit strange but my slippery tongue and adventurous mind sometimes get the better of me. This is just a reflection of some of the scenes that have run through my mind recently. Much of it is, of course, my own interpretation!
Warning: All characters are STRICTLY *elephant yinmu* fictional. Any perceived semblance is inadvertent!
So, the year is 1900 and a tiny seemingly insignificant kid is born in a bullshit environment (literally). His birth is as ordinary as anything that meets the eye, except they claimed his parents never did the do! So he’s a divine kid? We’ll see about that!

Well, in growing up, he wasn’t quite different from most of the hood kids. His pops didn’t have guns, weed or women lying about, so he did the best he could to help out at his dad’s carpentry outfit. He must have heaved a ton or two there, as he would later carry a very heavy wooden log for a fairly long “walk of fame”. Most of the hood kids didn’t care much for his real name; “Jay” was just too easy to yell. So, they’d typically stand on the front porch and shout “What it do, Jay? We storming Betty’s gig tonight! You riding or what?” or “Sup, Jay? The skateboard contest’s tomorrow and ‘Big Will’ be throwing down some mega bucks! You in?”. Jay, however, always seemed pre-occupied with other things. He’d fix their squeaky skateboard wheels alright – most times, even for free – but, he just could never spare the time to actually “ride” with them. There was always just something else on his mind. If he wasn’t studying ancient laws and prophesies, he was debating scholars and custodians of the law.

Jegaism Reloaded

“No one planned for what happened to happen. Man proposes but God disposes” – Prof Attahiru Jega

Hi guys. I’m terribly sorry for how long it’s been between my last post and now. An awful lot has happened in all that time: me getting four different jobs, asides CDS, church involvement and my personal life– which covers way more than photography, writing and tweeting; me doing some soul- and head-searching for the next big steps; me holding down a Saturday night radio show in a town with a 6pm bike curfew; me knocking off my modem subscription (yea, corps members aint exactly the wealthiest of folk) and me skipping a scholarship exam to teach my kids! A whole lot’s gone down here but I’m guessing an apology’s the most needed at this time.

So, once again, I’m sorry to have kept you waiting.
Also, I’ve gotta say a big shout-out to all the guys who clicked the “follow” button in all that time. You’re greatly appreciated!

To Jaycee, Omoregee and my Zamphee homie, Harry who tagged me, I owe you guys big. And, if it’s any consolation, in spite of how late it is, please note that I see my promise in the mirror everyday! Very soon, now; very soon!

Headless Headway

The way to succeed is to double your failure rate” – T.J. Watson
It’s intriguing how often “risky” gets misspelt  as “daft”” – Imisi
When I woke up that morning and couldn’t find any of the symptoms that had left me on the receiving end of pity the previous evening, I immediately knew it was a special day; heck, even a special year. How could I have forgotten I was in the new year? Maybe my missing the crossover service had a hand in it – having been a total vegetable the previous night. In fact, the only reason I wasn’t hung up for sale in the “groceries” section was because I didn’t have a NAFDAC number. One too many (simultaneous) vaccinations had left a huge mark on me.
Well, that was all gone now; a new day (and year) lay ahead! The day-by-day guy that I am, I set about the new year, typically without resolution. It just feels funny having to wait a whole year to make a decision that could make me better. And, seeing as I had just travelled about twenty hours for a two-hour service, lots of fried rice and cake, there wasn’t much else to plan the day around. As the sun smiled heartily through my window, all I could see were the makings of a fun-filled day.

Dream of my Dreams

Twenty years from now, when my story is told, I hope many will clap, few cry and some, get up, start walking and never stop! It doesn’t matter if it outlives me; it’s my dream all the same” – Imisi
“All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, to make it possible” – T. E. Lawrence
I wake up to find myself in one of the worlds I left behind; sweaty palms protruding from the sleeves of my suit, gripping tightly to my enveloped documents. Hope no one noticed me dosing off on the couch? I need this job; I really do – but it’s taking too long to get attended to!
They say like poles repel but my eyelids never excelled at science. They just seemed overly eager to kindle a long-lost romance – and at my expense too! I try to make them see reason; I try hard to keep them apart but I soon realize it’s futile. The flower-vase I fix my gaze on gradually morphs into the tiny fridge in my clustered apartment. The new calm is in sharp contrast to all the tension and imposed decorum of the office. I’m now sporting stone-wash jeans and a typically slim-fitted shirt as I approach my fridge for some tea. The world is now so advanced that beds fly to those – like me – who can’t afford the trek! This bachelor is not exactly broke – but, with skewed priorities, he appears to be just that! Sleep, being that one fountain both the affluent and wretched drink from, I dip my cup for a full dose – and I soon hear myself snoring!
I wake and my face is filled with sweat on the chilliest winter night I have lived to see. I can see my veranda covered in snow as I reach for my timepiece; “02:46, Lagos”, it reads. But, Lagos, winter? The alert mind would have spotted a seam – not mine. We’re conditioned to debate the inadequate, not the perfect. Elated, I continue – in perfection.

DISCLAIMER: What you’d see over the next 3 (or so) minutes is by no means an indication of a writer’s block [or whatever they call it]. It’s just a few sights that have come off my cameras’ lenses to make me marvel!

Seeing as I’m an incurable shutterbug, maybe we can work out an infrequent schedule for some of the other pics to get seen too. We’ll call those posts the “iSee Series“. Till then, and in no perceivable order, ………

In Thr33s [Last Man, First Aid]

Don’t cry because it ended. Smile because it happened” – Dr. Suess
Apologies may change a moment. Conviction is what changes people” – Imisi

Having started with “Lessons From The Future“, “A Hole In The Kite” and “Friend or Foe“, we wrap “In Thr33s” up here……….

………………………..

Conrad and MEO hit the crux after a typical exchange of loud pleasantries.  They had been together long enough to know that “serious talk” usually meant serious talk. They quickly got down to business and Conrad reminded MEO of their last meeting with the GM and some project partners – the one in which the idea of temporarily cutting project funds was approved. MEO had been thinking about that meeting for a long time, but at the risk of sounding too money-conscious, had held his tongue. Now, the opportunity to talk had presented itself – but he still wasn’t sure what approach to employ. He chose, rather, to furrow his brow.

As they both exchanged worried looks, Conrad emphatically told MEO to erase the “temporary” part of that discussion because – according to him – such a move was hardly ever reversed in their company. “And he should know”, MEO thought, “afterall, he’s been here longer than I”.MEO’s mind raced back and forth, putting his life into pressured perspective. His life was at a crucial stage now, and reduction of funds was that last thing he needed. With all the plans for a lofty future with Yetunde still bouncing around in his head, he didn’t see much wrong with Conrad’s plan to delay the payment of contractors for a short while so as to augment the situation with interests on those sums. He would just tell his boss he was not yet satisfied with the quality of work; his Quality-Control certificate lending ready credence. Silence took charge as they both thought it over. It was a great plan – one that demanded some celebration. So, once again, the PS3 was called into action, accompanied, this time, by pizza (which Conrad had bought) and red-bull from his host’s over-efficient fridge.

In Thr33s [Friend or Foe]

The three signs of great men are — generosity in the design, humanity in the execution, moderation in success” – Otto von Bismarck
Weeds are flowers too, once you get to know them” –  A. A. Milne
Angels may nobly condescend to wear garments of flesh, but it’s demons who crave such outfits as a ready means to mislead many” – Imisi

Our story started off with “Lessons From The Future” and “A Hole In The Kite

While browsing a jobsite one evening, MEO stumbled on an advert about an opening in his dream company. His eyes lit up as he read and re-read the ad, convincing himself he was qualified to apply. Though he couldn’t find one reason not to apply, he was weighed down by the sheer thought of the many other companies he had applied to – with nothing to show for it. He began to mull over the benefits of working for such a company as words subconsciously trickled down his lips “God please, please, ………. help me this time”. He had been in such a position countless time before; if only the result would differ this time. Was it that heaven hadn’t been too impressed with him? Would the tides turn if he changed his ways? If only God would help him this time, he was ready to turn over a new leaf! It’s not strange in such desperate moments to confess all forms of sins – committed and otherwise! As such, MEO decided it was finally time to let go of whatever he adjudged to have denied him “divine aid”. He was tired of being a laughing-stock; heaven just had to hear him this time.

With landing the job as primary priority, he took a mental note of the things that really mattered – and, drinking wasn’t on it; neither was partying. In short, he was going to cut down on all “social outings”; anything that could shut out divine help was dispensable. He didn’t care what anyone said; hope had blinded him to pleasure! His free time was now split between praying, studying and planning for the future – and, just like clock-work, things began to fall into place. A squeaky voice in his head had called the decision to apply “too optimistic” – but he had gone ahead, all the same. This was one golden chance he had no plan of passing up. The plan was going to give the interview-panel all he had. In fact, he was going to impress them so much that even if they felt he wasn’t experienced enough for that post, they’d be obliged to find him another!

In Thr33s [A Hole In The Kite]

Associate with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation; for it is better to be alone than in bad company” – George Washington
The best thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time” – Abraham Lincoln

The story started with “In Thr33s: Lessons From The Future

Mr Oladele’s words struck a chord within MEO’s sub-conscious and the ensuing vibration seemed to blur out every other activity of that day. As time went on, MEO noticed his dad’s bloated love for proverbial speech. In six short months after his 18th birthday, he couldn’t count how many of such talks he had “survived”. The boy had heard his dad say “every man should have three sets of eyes: one in front of his head, one within his skull and one in his guts”. He had also heard “Son, the world is in three tiers; the third, being reserved for those who acknowledge the limitations of the first two”, in the sober moments following a nerve-wrecking game in which they both prayed for their team to win. Still, it didn’t appear like his dad was done; unknown to him, there was one lesson his dad wanted him to learn – even if it cost a fortune!

MEO could hardly believe his luck when, without lobbying, his dad opted to take him along on a business trip to Dubai. Such a gesture was usually reward for exemplary behavior – which wasn’t particularly his forte! Mid-way through the flight, he kept asking himself if it was all a dream. Whatever the case, it was one dream he didn’t want to wake from in a hurry. There was much to gist about, at first, but things got quieter after a while. Admittedly, they both ran out of gist-topics and the flight began to appear long to MEO. When the pilot eventually announced their descent, the news was welcomed with a huge sigh from him. Just as he re-adjusted his seat into position, he locked eyes with his dad, who obviously had been waiting for that moment. Mr Oladele wore that familiar pensive look as he opened his mouth. “Every flight – no matter how long – has only three phases: take-off, cruise and landing. This, is by far the most important of them. Every flight must end; it’s never about when. It’s how: touchdown or knockdown? Son, remember that”. The lad was, however, too distracted by the cramps in his legs to do any more than store the words away; he really couldn’t process the lot. Everything on his mind was centred around having a memorable holiday!
